Stress is one of the many triggers of addiction. When we are stressed and we don’t have the necessary tools to relieve it, we can go to our previous coping mechanisms to deal with the stress. You can start with basic steps to helping your body manage stress better.
Sometimes when we have racing thoughts it is a good idea to slow down and refresh our minds. Take 15 minutes in the morning to slow down and put intent into your day. Visualize the accomplishments and feel the calm feelings you want to achieve.
Healthy Diet and exercise
While you are meditating you can do some stretching or yoga. It is a good idea to make time to get outside in nature and get a walk. Or maybe go to a gym and get a cardio active work out to release toxins and stress. It is good to make it a regular ritual to make sure you keep exercise in your life. Drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet.
When we get a chaotic schedule it is a good idea to get a calendar to organize all your events, and also prioritize what you can get done that week. It is okay to say no to certain things that you can not meet in your schedule and keep your life balanced with good time management.
Take a break
When you are working on a project, or dealing with emotional stress. Take a break from the stressor and read a book, watch a movie, or enjoy a dessert you like. We all need to make sure that we keep our bodies well rested.
This is a good therapeutic way to release our stress into writing our problems on paper, or use it to channel artistic thoughts into a poem. You do not need to share with anyone so feel free to share your thoughts and it can help you realize your solutions.
Find a Hobby
Find something that you enjoy doing. We need to find activities that make us smile and laugh. Or it can be something that gives you some recognition or praise. It can be anything from swimming, taking a pottery class, rock climbing, or writing. Sometimes addicts will lose what they used to enjoy doing. If you already have a hobby that used to give you joy you can try to do it again, or you can also try something that you have never done before.
