What Is Drug Detoxification?

Long-term substance abuse is profoundly taxing on the body and brain.

Medical professionals who specialize in recovering from drug abuse, use a medical intervention process called detoxification, or more commonly called “detox.”

Medical detox can safely help a substance abuser’s body expel the drugs from itself while helping a substance abuser make it through the experience of acute withdrawal.

The primary goal of any detoxing program is to help the body and mind return to a level of stability and begin healing after a sustained period of drug or alcohol addiction.

Once the person recovering is stabilized, they can more easily transition to a long-term treatment program.

It’s important to understand that detoxification is not the end goal itself; rather, it can be the beginning of recovery. After detoxification, a recovering drug abuser is often in a better position to more fully benefit from the recovery process offered by Pomarri’s treatment programs.

How Long Will Detox Take?

Based on extensive experience, as well as recent clinical studies, it has been found that a longer detoxification episode resulted in lower relapse rates.

At Pomarri, our detoxification ranges from 8-12 weeks.

What Will Detox Be Like?

No two drug users are alike. The types of drugs they used, the amount and even the potency of drugs means that everyone will have a different experience with detox.

Pomarri uses various medications during someone’s detox to help keep the former user as comfortable as possible while the drugs are cleansed from their body.

What About Withdrawals?

There are many factors which can affect both the length and severity of your withdrawal symptoms.

Withdrawal symptoms may take anywhere from several days to several months to successfully get through withdrawal symptoms.

The length of withdrawal depends on a number of factors, including:

  • The type of drugs taken
  • How much and how long the particular drugs were abused
  • How they abused (snorting, smoking, swallowing, or injecting)
  • The degree of abuse or addiction
